Fall Festival Fun in Virginia

September 22, 2009 at 10:38 pm Leave a Comment

The leaves are changing, acorns are dropping and there is a chill in the air. Yes, fall is here! Although I miss the warm summer nights, fall is a wonderful time of year. There are so many family friendly activities that take place in the fall and many are free or inexpensive.

Every year, my family heads to Fluvanna Old Farm Day in Palmyra. The cost, a whopping $4 for adults and kids 12 and under are free.  Arts, crafts and entertainment abound at Old Farm Day. There are demonstrations and exhibits that portray the old farm life. My son’s favorite activity is to watch the old tractors run. I enjoy looking at the many craft and informational booths. Of course there is plenty of good old country BBQ to enjoy too! Fluvanna Old Farm Day takes place on October 3rd from 10am-4pm this year.

Another activity my family enjoys in the fall is apple picking. There are several orchards near our house. We enjoy going to the smaller orchards to pick apples for applesauce, apple butter and apple jelly. We grab a wagon and take the kids for a ride through the rows of trees.

Carters Mountain Orchard holds an Apple Harvest Festival October 3rd-4th and the 10th-11th. Take your kids to Carters Mountain for an unbelievable view! It is truly picturesque on a clear day. During the Apple Harvest Festival their are hayrides, music and crafts. Don’t forget to taste the apple donuts, yummy!

One thing I would like to do is get lost in a corn maze. I can just picture my boys running through the corn stalks, discovering dead ends and laughing uncontrollably! It turns out that there are several corn mazes in Virginia. Many places have pumpkin patches, hay rides and farm animals as well. The corn mazes range in price from $8-$10 per person. So, it is not the most frugal activity but you could make a whole day adventure. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the fall colors.

There are many other Fall Festivals throughout Virginia; one every weekend from now until the first weekend in November. If you know of any fall events happening in Virginia, we would love to hear from you!
