Kiva Small Loans Can Make a Big Difference

August 12, 2010 at 8:35 am 1 Comment

Kiva - loans that change lives

“Kiva.org allows people the very American satisfaction of both helping someone and getting their money back.” – John S. Johnson, The Huffington Post.

Kiva.org is a non-profit revolutionizing the fight against global poverty by enabling people to connect with and make personal loans to low-income entrepreneurs in the developing world. Through Kiva, anyone can make a direct loan of as little as $25—and in doing so contribute to a vital influx of capital to the developing world where most of the poor are self-employed entrepreneurs. A small loan to purchase business-related items such as sewing machines or livestock can dramatically improve the life of an entrepreneur and his/her family, thus empowering them to earn their way out of poverty.

To find out the details of how a Kiva loan works you can visit their website. $25 can help women buy materials for their garment business, help a woman in Nicaragua provide a safe environment for her two year old, or help a hardworking man pay the import taxes to the countries he buys his store’s items from.

I hope that you will visit Kiva’s website to learn more about this non-profit organization and consider helping others who are profiled on their site. *Please note that there is no guarantee of loan repayment. Currently there is a 98.79% repayment rate.

I am so glad to see you highlighting this great organization. I just discovered them myself a few weeks ago and gave a loan to a woman who needed to buy inventory for her store. Such a worthwhile project! I am in the process of starting my own business and our chosen charity will be this one. I love that we are helping others help themselves.
