ReStore: Home Shopping for Less

The thought of having to shell out a ton of money when the appliances in my home decide to take their final bow can send me over the edge. I see dollar signs floating by my eyes, cash registers laughing at me, my credit card bending every which way to avoid being put through the scanner. You all know what I mean!

The trip to your local Home Depot, Loews, Sears or any local hardware store can make my heart drop to the floor. Very often my family and I can find a great deal at PC Richards on a floor model for an appliance. My husband can talk pretty good game in most situations. Kind of scary to watch and hear….makes me wonder sometimes. As his wife, I know when he goes into “slinging the poop” mode! (He actually got me the Shark Steam Pocket Mop at Bed Bath and Beyond for approximately $84.00 – normally that thing is $119.00).

However, we can’t always get a floor model. So we found another place to check out. Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore. There are locations all over the country AND Canada. Ours happens to be about 5 minutes from our home. When we visited the first time, we could not believe the items they had and the prices for it.

The concept at ReStore is people donate items to the store, the store sells them to raise money for Habitat for Humanity. A lot of it is brand new. They only accept new, or gently used building materials and supplies, along with appliances. It cuts down on landfill waste, because builders, as well as homeowners, can donate items and get a tax deduction for the items they donate.

You can find things as simple as light bulbs, caulk and bricks. Or you can find larger items like cabinets, ceiling fans, garage doors and just about anything you can think of. Furniture, windows, light fixtures, paint, lumber, plumbing supplies, sinks, wallpaper, window treatments—I can go on and on. If you have a house, look around your home and pretty much everything you see around you can be found at ReStore.

Obviously, different locations may not have everything every time you go, but at some point or another, it’ll show up at ReStore! Most of your purchases will save you about 60% off retail prices. Just as an example, at our local ReStore, there is this amazingly gorgeous Barclay Farmer Sink for $400.00—normally it would cost $900.00. If I could afford it, I would be getting this sink.

They have amazing finds at ReStore; plus buying items for your house there helps raise money for Habitat for Humanity to help someone else get a home of their very own…who doesn’t feel good about that?
