- Buy produce in its season. If you want strawberries in January, you’re going to pay a higher price for them.
- Plan meals around the sale items. Most entrees will work well with several different types of side dishes. You don’t necessarily have to have sweet corn every time you grill steak-sometimes a medley of grilled carrots, cauliflower or broccoli will be just the right price to serve on the side.
- Buy what your family likes every time it’s on sale. We love a fresh fruit snack in our family, but we don’t have all our favorites every week. Sometimes we have bananas and peaches; sometimes we have apples and strawberries, but there is fresh fruit available all the time.
- Watch expiration dates. Produce has a limited shelf life—learn the expiration times of the foods you love and be sure to buy only as much as you can use within that time frame.
- Use it or lose it. Try to use up produce that is reaching its expiration. Stews are a great way to get rid of a lot of vegetables at once. Breads and fruit salads are a great way to use up your excess fruit.
