Homemade Cleaners & More

April 29, 2009 at 2:43 pm

One of the simplest ways to save money is to do things for yourself. From DIY home improvement to frozen dinners to clothing projects, homemade is inexpensive and often better. Here are a few simple recipes to get you started:

Glass Cleaner: Combine 1 part rubbing alcohol, 1 part water and a few drops of vinegar in a clean spray bottle.

Automatic Dishwasher Detergent: Mix 1 part Borax with 1 part baking soda. Use vinegar in the rinse agent compartment for a cleaner rinse and even more savings.

Baby Food: You’ll have the added advantage of knowing exactly what is in your baby’s food. Cook fruits and vegetables, then puree as needed, adding water if necessary. Divide and freeze prepared food for storage. There are websites more fully dedicated to the process and recipes.

Baby Wipes: Homemade baby wipes are inexpensive, especially if you are cloth diapering. Simply combine 1 cup water, 2 tablespoons baby oil and 2 tablespoons baby wash in a container. You can use paper towels or baby washcloths for higher, greener savings.

Compost: We’ve touched on how gardening saves money. Compost is a rich, earthy soil additive and can be easily made at home starting with kitchen scraps.
