Make the Most of Your Kroger Fuel Rewards

June 7, 2011 at 1:59 pm 3 Comments

With gas prices at an all-time high across the country, it’s time to step up our game and really take advantage of the fuel discount offers. One of my favorites is Kroger—partly because it’s right down the street, but mostly because it’s a simple way to lower the fuel budget by doing something I have to do anyway—buy groceries!

For every $1 you spend on groceries at Kroger, you get 1 fuel point. For every 100 fuel reward points accumulated, you’ll save $.10/gallon at the pump. The cool part is that the grocery total is pre-coupon! So, if you spend $100 on groceries, then deduct $25 in coupons, you will still receive 100 fuel reward points.

Plus, they are currently running a special for quadruple points on gift card purchases. This does not work on Kroger gift cards, though, but they have a huge variety of stores & restaurants available in the gift card center. If you dine out or go to the movies regularly, pickup gift cards the next time you are at the grocery store, instead of paying cash. This way, you’ll get a deep discount on gas for money you would spend anyway.

Be sure to fill your largest tank with your largest discount each month. Keep in mind that Kroger doesn’t use a first in, first out system. Fuel rewards for each month are calculated separately and expire at the end of the following month. At the pump, Kroger will deduct the largest discount, rather than the one expiring first.

We learned that the hard way, when the hubby fueled his little tank at $.40/gallon while I was stuck pumping on $.10/gallon. So, we’ve come up with a system to really get the most out of our fuel rewards by maxing out at the pump each time we redeem a discount. It ordinarily costs us about $80-90 to fill the tank in my van. The hubby spends around $40-50 on his car.

When I rack up a good discount—we shoot for $.40/gallon—we hit the gas station together, back up to the same pump and fill both vehicles until the credit card transaction limit kicks in! Saves a bundle every time.

Kroger left Northeast OH over 20 years ago. We have Giant Eagle (and a local Acme chain (not the national Acme)) for fuel deals. G.E. (the better of the 2) gives you 10 cents per $50 spent on groceries or other goods or gift cards. Of course, I don’t know how good Kroger’s everyday and sale prices are vs. Giant Eagle. The latter’s are generally HIGH.
