Fashion Fun on Limited Funds

Madame Deals is co-written by two money savvy moms. We are thrilled to have their blog as part of our network, with Renae writing and contributing grocery deals. However, today we are pleased to share advice from Amee on one of her favorite topics.

What if you had just $25 to pull together a whole look? Could you make an outfit? Would your outfit be holiday worthy?  Could you wear part of your holiday outfit in another way? The answer to all the above is YES! Yes! YES!

The key to fashion is function and fit. The key to looking good on less is creativity. The first thing I do is grab a fashion magazine. I thumb through it and find a couple of looks that I can replicate for much less. Then I look for a key piece at an inexpensive store. I start with the thrift stores. Then I move to consignment stores. If I still haven’t found anything special I hit stores like HM, Forever 21, Target, Wal-Mart, Kmart, or the major department stores. I have bought several super items on sale at Macy’s. Coupled with a coupon, it can be really inexpensive.

Focus on your shirt or accessories when daring to step outside your comfort zone. The reason is simple; it is easier to find a stunning shirt than an outrageous bottom that looks good. Most of us would rather not point out our lower half with something outrageous, anyway! In order to get the most bang out of your buck, you need to pair the classic with the creative, trendy, and colorful. Use textures or patterns to change the feel of the outfit.

These are the items I suggest adding to your wardrobe.

  • Black pants that are flat front. That means no pleats, designs or large pockets. These items all add volume. We do not want volume near our tummy.
  • Color: Find a color that flatters you. Then you need to buy a shirt, blouse, and sweater in that color; depending on the season.
  • A great pair of jeans. They need to be dark in color. This will make your legs look longer and your bottom smaller.
  • A classic white shirt. This will lend itself to the black pants or jeans for two totally different looks.

Here is what I did for UNDER $25. This is for all the items in the different looks you see. I scored them all in two different outings to Goodwill. I wanted to show you how to make your holiday looks classic, chic, and cheerful without spending a lot of money. I selected items that you could easily put in your work wardrobe or for a night out.

Pants:
Black Ann Taylor Loft $3.50
Cream Sigrid Olsen $3.50

Tops:
Black Pbj Sport $3.50
Cream Merona Lace Top $3.50
Sweater:
Gold Ann Taylor $3.50

Shoes:
Steve Madden wedges $2.50

Boots:
Ann Taylor $3.50

The key to frugality in fashion is making every item functional and fun!

All really great places to shop for those that want to look hip on a budget! I’m a big fan of Target because their women’s apparel is affordable and modest.
