Tonight, we ring in 2011—our annual homemade pizzas are in the oven, the champagne is chilling and the noisemakers are ready & waiting. Tomorrow, we all start fresh—a whole new year. A whole new chance to get our lives under control.

And, it all starts with the budget.

We’re kicking off 2011 with an awesome series to help you get a better handle on your finances. You’ll learn how to create a budget from scratch, or tweak an existing one. This series will help you find wiggle room in your budget, whether your goal is building up the 401(k), to pay off credit card debt, building your emergency fund, paying mortgage off early or just to start saving for fun things like vacations & large purchases.

Step by step, we’ll walk through the process of creating, lowering and using a household budget to improve your life. Each day of January will offer new tips, ideas and a challenge to start the year with a solid financial plan. Join us daily, work each step throughout the year, or catch up later—whenever you have 31 days to devote to a better budget.

I’m not a financial planner or a budget expert. I’ll just be walking you through the steps I take each time my budget needs an adjustment. In fact, I’ll be participating myself!

Cutting Costs (And Your Hair)

If you are looking for ways to be more frugal, a first step can be looking in the mirror.  If you get your hair cut at a salon every 4 weeks at a cost of $20, you can spend more than $360 a year on getting your hair cut.  And, if you are anything like [...]

Family Fun Memberships that Save

One of our favorite things to do in the winter is visit the children’s museum. It isn’t free (although they do have a free day once per month) but investing in a family membership sure makes it feel that way when I’m looking for something to break cabin fever. You can purchase a membership to [...]

Eating Healthy On a Budget

One of the reasons I hear all the time for not using coupons is you can’t find deals on healthy foods. It’s just another coupon myth—my family eats very well, and we do it on a tight budget. I pay attention to sales, stockup when I find a deal and make seasonal choices to keep [...]

Free Indoor Fun (Because It’s Cold Outside)

A monthly family fun outing is a great way to spend time together, but our choices become more limited in colder months. Here’s a little know fact (unless you happen to know me personally to hear me complain all the time): I hate snow! It’s cold, it’s wet and it takes away my favorite activities. [...]

Date Night on the Cheap

Joining us this week is Joanna from It’s Just Change, giving us a peek into (free) date nights with her hubby. Joanna is a computer programmer by day, gardener by night in central Indiana where she lives with her husband and their dog. She writes about saving money & spending it ethically at It’s Just [...]

The Hidden Cost of Disorganization

Oh, I wish I were an organized person! Peter Walsh asks in his book, “What is clutter costing you?” He thinks in terms of space, peace and relationships but after this week’s decluttering experience, I’m considering the monetary costs. Earlier today, I shared a few ways to make money off the items you are purging. [...]

4 Great Ways to Benefit from Decluttering

Aside from the obvious benefit of being free from clutter, there are a variety of ways to sell or trade your unwanted stuff. In addition to the traditional yard sale and the ever popular document.write(‘eBay’);eBay and Craigslist, we’ve found a few new(ish) ways to unload or trade up your old items. It’s time to start [...]

Declutter by Hosting a Swap

The holiday’s have passed, your closets are bursting and it’s time to get organized! I know my children’s rooms and closets were busting at the seams after their Christmas presents made their appearance. I spent two days going through their toys and clothes in order to declutter. It is so refreshing to start anew with [...]

General Mills Cereals Lower Sugar: $1 Coupon

Image by chrismetcalf via Flickr When My Blog Spark asked my family to try the new reduced sugar kids’ cereals, I was thrilled—many General Mills cereals are naturally gluten free. We don’t buy them often, though, because I don’t like to start my girls’ day with so much sugar. It is nice to have some [...]
