December Calendar

There are only 90 days until Black Friday. That’s just under 13 Weeks—and isn’t that a lucky number? Lucky for you, since I’m here to remind you it’s never too early to start preparing for Christmas. As Dave Ramsey always says, “Christmas is not an emergency.” December 25th arrives on the same day, every year!

So, why do we find ourselves scrambling for cash, rushing out on Christmas Eve for last minute shopping or paying extra to overnight gifts & Christmas Cards? The 119 days until Christmas might sound pretty far away, but it creeps up very quickly if you aren’t planning ahead.

I wasn’t kidding on Viva la Value, when I mentioned that I start shopping for the holidays, right after the holiday. So far, I have stocking stuffers in my gift closet, a picture of the girls selected for our Photo Cards and a spreadsheet that lists our holiday budget, the people we’ll buy for and ideas for gifts as I think of them. But the bane of my existence? Those Holiday Cards!

I always come up with these awesome ideas, but they either don’t get executed, I’m stressing at the last minute or I give up on the timing altogether & call it a New Year’s card. The only reason I ever managed to get Baby Announcements out all 3 times is that I prefilled as much as I could & had dedicated alone time in the hospital to finish them!

This year, I’m determined to get that last aspect of Christmas prep under control—thanks to our friends at Cards Direct! They’re giving away a $50 coupon code to get you started. Plus, we’ve got a few things to do now to keep your holiday season under control:

  1. If you haven’t already assigned a number to your holiday budget, discuss it now.
  2. Make a list of everyone you intend to include on your holiday gift list.
  3. Start considering small gifts—teachers, hosts, white elephant exhanges—when you find freebies, cash back deals & gift certificate offers. (Free samples make great gift basket stuffers!)
  4. Decide if you want a formal or casual family portrait.
  5. Start adding non-perishable baking supplies to your grocery list each week—a little each week will have you fully stocked before the first cookie exchange!
  6. Win a $50 coupon code from Cards Direct to buy your Christmas Photo Cards early!

Today is the first day of school for the public school system in my area. My Facebook stream is filled with pictures of children, excitedly sporting their new backpacks filled to overflowing with new school supplies. Good Earth Dinner Kit (Review & Giveaway)

I’m really big on cooking from scratch, but I love to have dinner kits on hand for emergencies. Unfortunately, most of my family lives gluten free so they get a bit pricey. The hubby, however, can eat as he pleases! When Good Earth offered to send a dinner kit sample, I was thrilled for him [...]

Fashion Playtes: Design Your Own Girls’ Clothing (Review & Giveaway)

My oldest daughter has hit the picky stage. Little Miss Fashion Plate hates everything I choose for her. Her grandma has started taking her shopping for birthdays instead of buying her gifts. And, even then, she has trouble finding whatever it is she sees in that preteen head of hers. “I really like this shirt, [...]

Hasbro Board Game Night: Frugal Fun & Games

A couple weeks ago, I had the opportunity to host a Hasbro Game Night House Party. This came at the perfect time—a few local Twitter friends & I absolutely needed to get together. We quickly put together a girls night in—sponsored by Hasbro! Of course, even without the House Party goodies, a game night in [...]

Barefoot Week for Soles 4 Souls (Plus Rascal Flatts Autographed Shoes Giveaway)

I’m taking over Giving Inexpensively from Alicia today, to tell you about a cool program I learned about at Blissdom earlier this year. Soles 4 Souls collects shoes and gives them to those in need. Blissdom bloggers sent over 200 pairs of shoes to Haiti in February, but the organization works year ’round to provide [...]

Everyday Makeup for Less (Everyday Minerals Review & Giveaway)

When Everyday Minerals asked me to give their makeup a try, I was thrilled to have a new option for inexpensive mineral makeup. I’ve only been wearing makeup regularly for the last several months. I’m just not much of a girl girl and can’t stand the caked feel of most makeups. But, when you hit [...]

Tips for Fuel Efficiency (Plus Jiffy Lube Gift Card Giveaway)

Image via Wikipedia Gasoline is one of life’s necessary expenses that really irritates a frugal control freak like me. I can’t control the prices, I can’t predict a sale and I can’t just do without. So, what’s a money saving gal like me supposed to do? Well, ask the experts, of course! The fabulous folks [...]
