Thanks to American Express for sponsoring my writing today about small businesses. American Express is presenting Small Business Saturday, a way to honor the local merchants who are the backbone of the economy, this Saturday, November 27. They’re offering statement credits to people who shop at small businesses, advertising for small-business owners, and donations to Girls Inc. for “Likes” of the Small Business Saturday page on Facebook. Join the celebration by clicking the “Like” button and then visiting the Facebook page to learn more about the program and read the terms and conditions that apply.
Small Business Saturday arrives just in time for the big holiday shopping weekend—get a $25 credit on your statement when you register your American Express card & shop at your favorite small business on Saturday. (Update: They have just extended benefits through 12/31!)
Yes, yes, I’ll be one of the crazy Black Friday shoppers, braving the crowds, the cold and the early morning. (Or, how about all night—did you see the Black Friday times this year?) But, I won’t be able to finish my holiday shopping without a stop at our local knitting store.
For my 7-year-old!
The new assistant teacher in her classroom brought in knitting supplies and taught the kids how to knit. Several of the children are making their own scarves or planning to piece their work together to make a blanket for someone in need. (I just love the giving hearts of children!) I love that their teachers have given them this gift—something so unique to treasure. Even the boys are getting into it.
Brenia is absolutely fascinated with knitting, even if she isn’t quite as good as others just yet. She wants to learn more patterns so she can knit—get this—socks! I’m all for it, since I get so tired of buying them anyway. She raided her grandmother’s yarn stash last week and has big plans for all the amazing things she’s going to make now that she knows how to knit.
And, so, I am off to Stitches ‘N Scones to buy a beginning knitter’s kit. I’ve been there before with my mom (you know, because grandmas knit), but that talent has clearly skipped a generation! The is wall to wall color—absolutely gorgeous yarn top to bottom. They even teach knitting classes—Brenia told me I should take one, then she offered to teach the hubby herself!
I don’t know what that means.

Love it! I’m a new knitter, so Stacia and I are probably at about the same skill level. We should join forces and knit a blanket. 🙂

I meant Brenia!

Ha ha! She’s still very, very beginner and hasn’t actually finished a project yet. But, she loves it so I’m all about encouraging something that can have such lasting benefit.

Awww, Elena will be thrilled to know you linked her to your blog! You know how much I love this knitting thing they’ve got going on. Elena just finished a purse (!) for herself. I’m so glad you linked up to Stitches & Scones – you reminded me to support their business for a certain gift I need to buy this Christmas 🙂
