I recently had to replace my dog’s electric fence out of the blue. My dog ended up across the street in a neighbors yard. I was super bummed because it was only 2 years old and not exactly cheap.
I went online and the cheapest replacement system was $300.00. Ouch. I was looking for just the collar, figuring that must be much less expensive. I had no luck finding it and decided to call the manufacturer, Petsafe. When I called the manufacturer, I found that the product was under a lifetime warranty. All I had to pay was $18.00 to get the replacement collar sent to me!
A phone call saved me $282.00. Who knew that it had such a great product guarantee (by the way, kudos to Petsafe for the awesome customer service I received).
Here are some great tips to make sure you utilize your warranty coverage to the fullest.
- Register your product – Registering your product will start the clock for your warranty, especially if it is a 1 year or limited warranty. Once registered, the manufacturer has it on record and now if your product should have a problem, the purchase information is easily accessible.
- Call the manufacturer – Take a few minutes and call the manufacturer when you have a problem with the product. It is worth 15 minutes to potentially save money if your product is covered under warranty.
- Save your receipts - Find a safe place and keep receipts for your bigger purchase. If you have a problem with the product, you will have your purchase information readily available.
- Keep your warranty information - If I would have been able to find the replacement number, I probably would have ordered a new fence. If I had my warranty information available, I would of known immediately to call for a replacement.
- Extended Warranty – If you opt for an extended warranty, keep your receipt and policy extension handy to know where to call. Often the manufacturer does not provide the extended warranty, so you will need the contact name for the extended warranty provided.

Sometimes it pays to call the manufacturer even if a product is not in warranty! Our Harmony One remote (awesome product, btw, though not at all frugal) died a couple weeks ago. The hubby contacted them to see if there was a way to reset it or replace just the battery. They sent us a whole new remote at no charge!
