Food Banks Inexpensively

Grain Food Foundation recently hosted a blogger event with Melissa d’Arabian (host of Food Network’s ‘Ten Dollar Dinners’)  to launch the Bread Art Project in Chicago. Here’s a picture of my children and I with Melissa:

Here’s a little more about the Bread Art Project from their media kit:

The Bread Art Project was created by the Grain Foods Foundation to help increase awareness of the growing hunger problem in our country. In 2009, visitors to breadartproject.com created more than 25,000 pieces of Bread Art and helped raise more than $25,000 for Feeding America.

This year’s goal is to raise even more for Share Our Strength®, the leading national organization working to end childhood hunger in America by 2015. Share Our Strengthweaves together a network of community groups, activists and food programs to identify kids who face hunger and ensure that they have nutritious food where they live, learn and play. Funds raised through programs like The Bread Art Project support Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign to end childhood hunger in America by 2015.

The Grain Foods Foundation will donate $50,000 to Share Our Strength plus an additional $1 for each qualifying Bread Art submission received at breadartproject.com now through June 30, 2010.

What does your donation provide?
o $1 can help provide three nutritious meals to a hungry child
o $25 can help feed one child three healthy meals every day for a month
o $50 can help connect one child with healthy meals throughout the summer
o $100 can help provide 25 children facing hunger backpacks full of healthy food to feed them and their families over the weekend
o $200 can help buy grocery bags of healthy food for 50 families in need
o $500 can help reach 12 low income families with a life changing, 6-week nutritious cooking and food budgeting course
o $1,000 can help expand a summer feeding program to reach hundreds more children facing hunger during the summer months

Want to help? Go to their website and click “workshop”. A piece of bread will appear that you can decorate online. After you have decorated your bread you click on “save art” and enter some basic information about yourself and you are done. It’s that easy. A few minutes of your time spent coloring will give one child three nutritious meals. Below is the piece that I made for their gallery.

My Bread Art

I hope you will join me in providing food for those that are hungry. If you would like to give more than a dollar you can go to their giving page and find out how to do so. You can also easily donate $5 to Share Our Strength by texting the word “SHARE” to 20222 on your cell phone. At the time of this writing the amount of total donations (according to the Bread Art Project website)  is $40,789—that is a lot of artwork!
