Finding a calendar that works for your family is an important part of home organization, but it can also save you money. Use your calendar to keep track of appointments, events and special occasions as well as payment due dates and your weekly menu. Include everything that ever needs a date—school projects, due dates for paperwork and reminders to mail cards or return phone calls.
Heather’s favorite calendar is Amy Knapp’s Family Organizer. The spaces are large so you can keep track of absolutely everything. Each day includes a space to plan your weekly menu. The portable planner version will be released soon and includes a tear-off sheet on each page for keeping track of needed groceries and a to-do list for planning your errands. Tape an envelope to the cover for storing receipts as well.
The 17-month format allows you to use one calendar through a school year, as your children bring home dates from school, sports and other activities. Keep the calendar in a prominent place (consider the bathroom—the last thing you’ll see at night and the first place you look in the morning) to help you gain control over your family’s life and finances.
