Tonight, we ring in 2011—our annual homemade pizzas are in the oven, the champagne is chilling and the noisemakers are ready & waiting. Tomorrow, we all start fresh—a whole new year. A whole new chance to get our lives under control.

And, it all starts with the budget.

We’re kicking off 2011 with an awesome series to help you get a better handle on your finances. You’ll learn how to create a budget from scratch, or tweak an existing one. This series will help you find wiggle room in your budget, whether your goal is building up the 401(k), to pay off credit card debt, building your emergency fund, paying mortgage off early or just to start saving for fun things like vacations & large purchases.

Step by step, we’ll walk through the process of creating, lowering and using a household budget to improve your life. Each day of January will offer new tips, ideas and a challenge to start the year with a solid financial plan. Join us daily, work each step throughout the year, or catch up later—whenever you have 31 days to devote to a better budget.

I’m not a financial planner or a budget expert. I’ll just be walking you through the steps I take each time my budget needs an adjustment. In fact, I’ll be participating myself!

Cold & Flu Preparedness Kit

As hard as we try to avoid the germs, someone will get sick this winter—and, likely, pass it on to the rest of the house! Since I can’t avoid everything, I try to keep the right supplies on hand, just in case. You know, because the best offense is a good defense. Or, something like [...]

Join the January Clean Out the Cupboards Challenge!

Are your cabinets, refrigerator and freezer neatly organized and inventoried or are they a little more like mine—overflowing and unorganized?  If I stopped to really go through everything I have on hand, I probably wouldn’t have to shop (except for eggs and milk) for the next three months!  Okay, that might be a bit of [...]

Giving In The New Year

Many people set goals for the New Year, and if you are one of those people I want to encourage you to set some “giving” goals. What are those? Simply put, they are any thing that you want to plan to do for others. My giving goals this year include: 1) Making a homemade meal [...]

Merry Christmas, dear friends & readers—I hope you all have a wonderful holiday weekend. This is my last post until the middle of next week. Give This Christmas Away

I absolutely love this song entitled “Give This Christmas Away”  by Matthew West featuring Amy Grant. I know not all of you celebrate Christmas but I think the meaning behind this song is something we all can use a reminder of. Give this Christmas away If there’s love in your heart Don’t let it stay [...]

Big Gifts From Small Packages

It doesn’t take a lot to turn a small gift into a big presentation—you just need a simple way to make the gift look like more than it really is. We gave simple Starbucks gift cards to Stacia’s teachers this year in a coffee mug bouquet. I cut a small piece of floral foam, slipped [...]

Winter by the Bay is a free event on Long Island.

4 Days Until Christmas: Tracking Santa Claus

Our Countdown to Christmas continues—4 days until Christmas. If your children enjoy the magic and wonder of Santa Claus, there is nothing more fun than feeling a connection to him as we lead up to the big day. Your children may have already visited with Santa or written him letters, but did you know you [...]
